Behind the scenes this summer, we had a cast and crew of AMAZING high schoolers helping to pull off our first ever virtual program. Did you know all Summer Science Teaching Assistants (TA's) are volunteers?! We are indebted to them! TA's, thank you for working so hard to connect with students, facilitate activities, demonstrate experiments, and for becoming FlipGrid fiends! For our Summer Scientists and families, please take a moment to get to know and appreciate our TAs. We encourage all of you to send them a note thanking them for their help this summer! Violet P.What is your favorite field of science, or favorite school subject? My favorite school subject is probably English because reading and writing are some of my favorite things! Name THREE of your favorite things...go! Camping, writing, swimming! What do you want Summer Scientists to achieve/learn this Summer? I hope this years summer scientists were able to get in touch with everything around them better and despite the strange circumstances, and that they still found a way to enjoy science this summer. What are your favorite things about Summer Science students? All of them are super enthusiastic about learning and are great fun to be around! What is one piece of advice you've received and never forgotten? It sounds cheesy but: if you think you can you will, if you think you can’t you won’t. Kate B.What is your favorite field of science, or favorite school subject? My favorite areas in science are environmental sciences and human anatomy. I love being outside and traveling to new places to explore nature, which is why ecology is so interesting to me. I'm also very passionate about our environment and protecting it. As for human anatomy, I have always found human biology and body systems very interesting, which is why I plan on a career in the medical field. Who do you look up to? Who inspires you? I look up to my dance teacher. She is the hardest working person I know. She's always pushing my teammates and I to be the best that we can be. She's so supportive of her students and works hard to teach us while also studying in school. I love how she has taught us so many lessons that go way beyond the dance studio. Name three of your favorite things...go! Cheesecake, dogs, and Hawaii! What is your favorite thing about Summer Scientists? I love how all of the students are very engaged and eager to learn. It's very refreshing to see a group of students so curious about science! Molly S.What is your favorite subject, and favorite field of science? My favorite field of science is astronomy because learning about space and space travel fascinates me. However, I’d say that my favorite subject in school is art class because it’s very relaxing and fun. Who do you look up to? Who inspires you? I look up to Michelle Obama because she is very intelligent, confident, and kind. Name three of your favorite things...go! Playing piano, reading, and drawing What do you want Summer Scientists to achieve/learn this Summer? My hope for summer scientists this summer is to make friends with similar interests and discover a passion for science/learning. What is one piece of advice you've received and never forgotten? To live in the moment. You never want to worry too much about the past because you can’t change it, but also the future because it hasn’t happened yet and things will happen the way they’re supposed to. ChloeWhat is your favorite subject, and favorite field of science? Science? Astronomy. I’ve always just had an interest. Maybe it’s because I was forced to adore Star Wars and watched all 6 movies the day I was born. Subject? English. I’ve always just been generally good at it and I’m allowed to use my creativity. I also want to go into a career involving English. What is your favorite thing about Summer Scientists? They’re creativity and their different outlooks. They can help you see things from a different perspective and make you laugh. Name three of your favorite things...go! Spongebob, 1917 (2019), and Treasure Island, Florida Marissa L.What is your favorite field of science or school subject? This one is a tough one because I’ve had a lot of interests in many fields over the years. This past year though I found Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS) and a little bit of anatomy have been really interesting. PBS was really interesting because as we learned different units throughout the year, all of them were connected back to a victim of a crime scene. As we learned the different units we had to put the puzzles pieces together to figure out the cause of death. The anatomy part, I’ve always had a big interest in how the body works. Again, I have so many interests in quite a few fields of science. What made you want to be involved in Summer Science? When I was in Summer Science in 2017 I really loved every second of it. I got close with some of the TAs as well, so I was very excited when the program announced that they would be continuing, that way I could try and have an impact on the younger scientists just like my TAs has on me. What is your favorite thing about Summer Science students? How excited they are to learn, and their positive outlook, even after everything that’s been happening this year. Name THREE of your favorite things...go! 1. Sports (dance/softball) 2. Half baked Ben and Jerry’s ice cream 3. School What's one piece of advice you've never forgotten? One piece of advice?... I’ve gotten so much advice, and each year I get more and more. One thing that has always stuck with me though, is to always be kind. No matter who you are, what life throws at you, or what circumstances you’re in... choose to be kind. To others and to yourself. Makenna L.What is your favorite field of science or school subject? My favorite field of science is probably genetics because I love learning about what makes up a person on a genetic level. What made you want to be involved in Summer Science? I wanted to be involved with Summer Science because it was such an amazing experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life. What is your favorite thing about Summer Science students? My favorite thing about Summer Science students is probably their motivation to learn as much as they can about science. Name THREE of your favorite things...go! Three of my favorite things are Marvel, Star Wars, and chocolate. What's one piece of advice you've never forgotten? A piece of advice I've never forgotten is that you shouldn't let your past drag you down even if it's embarrassing. Reflecting and learning from mistakes made in the past are the only ways you're going to grow as a person. Other Teaching Assistants |
