Getting kids outside and into the community to engage in science and inquiry
Summer Science is an innovative enrichment program that gives students the opportunity to dive into the world of multiple science disciplines through field experiences and learning-by-doing. Students participate in five courses: Ecology, geology, chemistry, genetics, and engineering. Each course offers unique field experiences: field trips to local laboratories, research facilities, parks, trails, and more. The six-week program culminates with a three day camping trip to Wyalusing State Park where kids get to be kids: playing, hiking, and spending time with each other in the outdoors.
Summer Science was started under the guidance of Jim Ableidinger, Jim Stevenson, and Dennis Lenzendorf; it was then led by Peter O'Neil, and for the past 25+ years by Jay Farnsworth. This year, the torch is being passed to two new coordinators, Jessica North & Em Meier. Jessica has taught genetics in Summer Science for over 10 years and just wrapped up her 15th year teaching 8th grade science at WMS. Em has been involved in Summer Science as a student, assistant, and teacher. Em previously taught field-based courses at Teton Science Schools in Jackson, WY, and currently teaches 7th grade geography at the Middle School.
The goal of Summer Science is to provide meaningful experiences for students through science and beyond. Each summer, we hope our kids find something new that sparks their interest and helps them better understand the world around them and their places in it.
